REFLECTIONS ON CLASSWORK Students who were finished with their artwork early were encouraged to create a Mother's Day gift. Since the students needed more practice in creating color values, I decided to have them decorate beverage cups using value. They really enjoyed this activity. It reinforced the idea that students learn faster using materials they relate to and can use. For students to appreciate nonrelevant activities, is a challenge. Students do not like mosaics. I suppose it takes too long to complete. Weaving a scarf in the winter takes a long time also - longer than making a mosaic. I just think the difference between the two activities has to do with relevancy. Art teachers need to help students appreciate creating art for product and for arts' sake. I think the key is in finding art's sake activities that have a high success rate for the student.
REFLECTIONS ON CLASSWORK Discipline is a problem for all art teachers. if you can find a great lesson, with motivating materials and organize the lesson, half the battle is won. The other half of the battle for me has to do with cleaning up. Who has ideas in trying to encourage the students to clean up and clean up properly? Contests can create havoc, and not every teacher can afford treats regularly for the children.
Enjoyed your blog and presentation. There is so much to see and consider. I like the statement you said that students learn better and faster when they have projects they can relate to. That statement reminds of my students and how they relate to certain musical pieces better than others and learn more, and you can use that piece to introduce new music and instruction
